The 2012–13 season marked AC Milan’s 79th campaign in Serie A and its 30th consecutive season in the Italian top flight. Managed by Massimiliano Allegri, Milan underwent a transitional year after the departure of several key players. The summer saw the exits of stars like Zlatan Ibrahimović and Thiago Silva, who moved to Paris Saint-Germain, as well as club icons such as Alessandro Nesta, Clarence Seedorf, Gennaro Gattuso, and Filippo Inzaghi, marking the end of an era. These changes left the squad heavily reliant on younger talents and new arrivals.
In Serie A, Milan endured a difficult start, falling into the bottom half of the table early in the season. However, the team staged a remarkable comeback in the second half, thanks in large part to the emergence of Stephan El Shaarawy and the January acquisition of Mario Balotelli from Manchester City. Balotelli made an immediate impact, scoring 12 goals in just 13 league appearances, while El Shaarawy was instrumental in the first half of the season, finishing as Milan’s top scorer with 19 goals in all competitions. Milan ultimately secured a third-place finish with 72 points, earning qualification for the following season’s UEFA Champions League.
In European competition, Milan reached the Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League. They recorded an impressive 2–0 victory over Barcelona in the first leg at San Siro but were comprehensively beaten 4–0 in the return leg at Camp Nou, resulting in their elimination. In the Coppa Italia, Milan’s campaign ended in the quarter-finals with a 2–1 defeat to Juventus.
Riccardo Montolivo, who was named captain during the season, played a critical role in midfield, offering both leadership and creativity. Allegri’s tactical adjustments and the impact of Balotelli’s arrival were widely credited with stabilizing the team and propelling them into a Champions League spot despite the early struggles.
