The 1995–96 season was one of the most memorable in AEK Athens’ history, as Dušan Bajević’s side played an exciting attacking style, scoring 87 goals in 34 league matches and finishing second behind Panathinaikos. AEK’s greatest achievement came in the Greek Cup, where they defeated Olympiacos and Panathinaikos on their way to a spectacular 7–1 victory over Apollon Athens in the final, despite playing much of the second half with ten men. In Europe, they reached the second round of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup before being eliminated by Borussia Mönchengladbach, while Vasilios Tsiartas enjoyed an outstanding campaign, finishing as the league’s top scorer with 26 goals.
