The 1997–98 season was a memorable campaign for AEK Athens, who finished third in the Greek league while achieving an extraordinary unbeaten record against both Olympiacos and Panathinaikos, winning all four derby matches. Their strongest run came in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, where they eliminated Dinaburg and Sturm Graz before narrowly falling to Lokomotiv Moscow in the quarter-finals after conceding a dramatic late goal in the second leg. Domestically, AEK were eliminated early from the Greek Cup, while Demis Nikolaidis led the team with 19 league goals. The season also marked the retirement of legendary captain Stelios Manolas after 19 years with the club.
