The 1995–96 season saw Ajax continue their dominance in Dutch and international football under manager Louis van Gaal. The team retained their Eredivisie title, finishing first in the league with Patrick Kluivert leading the scoring with 15 goals. They also claimed the Johan Cruijff Shield, setting the tone for another successful campaign.
On the international stage, Ajax added two prestigious trophies to their collection. They won the UEFA Super Cup, defeating Real Zaragoza, and captured the Intercontinental Cup, triumphing over Grêmio in a dramatic penalty shootout.
However, their European campaign ended in heartbreak. Ajax reached the UEFA Champions League final for the second consecutive year but were defeated by Juventus in a penalty shootout after a 1–1 draw.
Domestically, Ajax were eliminated in the Round of 16 of the KNVB Cup, but their success in both the Eredivisie and on the global stage cemented their place as one of the top teams of the era. The season also marked their final games at the historic De Meer Stadion before moving to the Amsterdam Arena.
