The 2002–03 season was a disappointing campaign for Sporting CP, as the defending Primeira Liga champions struggled to replicate their prior success. Under manager László Bölöni, the club finished third in the league, a staggering 27 points behind José Mourinho’s dominant FC Porto.
Sporting’s season was derailed by issues in their attacking line, including an injury to star striker Mário Jardel in January. Jardel, who had been instrumental in their previous title-winning season, only managed to score 11 goals in all competitions, a sharp decline from his usual prolific output. The team’s struggles extended to European competitions, where they were eliminated early. In August, Inter Milan knocked them out in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, and the disappointment continued in September with a UEFA Cup first-round exit at the hands of Serbian side Partizan FK.
The season also marked the end of an era, as 18-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, a standout talent in Sporting’s midfield, was transferred to Manchester United, where he would begin his ascent to football stardom.
