The 1999–2000 season was a tumultuous one for Atlético Madrid. Despite Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink scoring 35 goals in all competitions, including 24 in La Liga, the team finished 19th and was relegated to the Segunda División. In the Copa del Rey, Atlético reached the final but lost to Espanyol. They also made it to the UEFA Cup fourth round before being eliminated. The season saw managerial instability, with Claudio Ranieri replaced by Radomir Antić in March and Fernando Zambrano taking over briefly in May. It marked a low point in the club’s history.
