Bayern Munich entered the 2001–02 campaign as defending Bundesliga and Champions League winners but fell short of expectations Bayern finished 3rd in the Bundesliga and exited the Champions League in the quarter-finals to Real Madrid, failing to defend their titles. They won the Intercontinental Cup but saw the season as a disappointment. In response, they signed Michael Ballack, Zé Roberto, and Sebastian Deisler to strengthen the midfield. Giovane Élber was top scorer with 24 goals.
In the 2002-04 campaign, Bayern bounced back winning the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal, dominating domestically with a 16-point lead. However, their Champions League campaign was a major letdown, exiting in the first group stage with just two points. Despite strong signings and a star-studded squad, the European failure overshadowed the season. Giovane Élber scored 31 goals in all competitions.
