The 2003–04 season was a challenging one for FC Bayern Munich, as they failed to win any trophies despite a strong individual performance from new signing Roy Makaay. Bayern finished second in the Bundesliga, falling short of champions Werder Bremen, and their disappointing 3–1 home loss to Bremen, with three goals conceded in the first 35 minutes, sealed their failure to clinch the title.
Defensively, Bayern struggled, which prevented them from catching up with Bremen. Makaay, however, adapted well to the Bundesliga, finishing as the league’s top scorer with 23 goals, and his overall tally of 31 goals made him Bayern’s top scorer for the season. In other competitions, Bayern were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal, the semi-finals of the DFB-Ligapokal, and the round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League. Despite the lack of silverware, Bayern did qualify for the following year’s Champions League.
