The 1998–99 season was a bittersweet one for Bayern Munich. Domestically, they excelled, winning the Bundesliga and the Ligapokal. However, they fell short in the DFB-Pokal, finishing as runners-up.
The season is best remembered for the dramatic 1999 UEFA Champions League Final against Manchester United. Bayern dominated much of the match, leading through a Mario Basler free-kick and hitting the woodwork twice. However, they suffered a heartbreaking defeat in injury time, with United substitutes Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær scoring to seal the treble for the English side.
Carsten Jancker was Bayern’s top scorer with 13 goals in the Bundesliga and 20 in all competitions.
