The 1990–91 season was a dramatic and eventful campaign for Boca Juniors. The club began the season under the management of Carlos Aimar, but inconsistent results led to his replacement by Óscar Tabárez on January 1, 1991. Under Tabárez’s leadership, Boca found renewed form and went on to win the 1991 Clausura tournament, showing strong performances and a more cohesive team dynamic.
By winning the Clausura, Boca Juniors earned the right to face Newell’s Old Boys, winners of the 1990 Apertura, in a two-legged playoff to determine the overall Argentine champions. Despite Boca’s momentum and improved play, Newell’s edged out the Xeneize in the final, winning the title in a tightly contested series.
