From 1996 to 1998, Boca Juniors entered a turbulent yet transformative phase, laying the foundation for future dominance. The period began with high-profile signings and the return of club icon Diego Maradona, who rejoined in 1995 and played sporadically until his final retirement in October 1997. Alongside him, Boca brought in stars like Claudio Caniggia, Juan Sebastián Verón, and later Martín Palermo and Guillermo Barros Schelotto, aiming to build a championship-winning side. Despite the talent, the team remained inconsistent, cycling through managers including Carlos Bilardo, Héctor Veira, and Mauricio Macri’s newly elected club presidency in 1995 seeking to restore order and success.

While Boca came close to winning the league—most notably in the 1997 Apertura, where they finished just behind River Plate—silverware continued to elude them. However, 1998 marked a turning point: Carlos Bianchi was appointed manager in mid-year, and under his leadership, Boca began to form the disciplined, winning identity that would define their golden era. Though the club did not claim any major titles between 1996 and 1998, this period was crucial in assembling the squad and structure that would dominate Argentine and South American football in the years to come.
