Germany’s Euro 1996 campaign was a triumphant return to the pinnacle of European football as they claimed their third European Championship title. The tournament, held in England, marked Germany’s first major success as a unified nation following reunification. Under the management of Berti Vogts, the German side displayed grit, organization, and resilience throughout the competition.

In the group stage, Germany was placed in Group C alongside Italy, the Czech Republic, and Russia. They started strongly with a 2-0 victory over the Czech Republic, courtesy of goals from Christian Ziege and Andreas Möller. In their second game, they convincingly defeated Russia 3-0, with Jürgen Klinsmann netting twice and Matthias Sammer adding a goal. A goalless draw with Italy in their final group match secured Germany’s top spot in the group.

In the quarter-finals, Germany faced Croatia and emerged victorious with a 2-1 win. Sammer’s decisive goal showcased his importance as both a defensive anchor and a scoring threat. The semi-final against England was a dramatic encounter. After a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time (with Stefan Kuntz scoring Germany’s goal), the match went to penalties. The final against the Czech Republic at Wembley was another tense affair. The Czechs took the lead through a Patrik Berger penalty, but Germany equalized through Oliver Bierhoff. Bierhoff then scored the tournament’s first-ever “golden goal” in extra time, sealing a 2-1 victory and Germany’s third European Championship title.
