The 2000–01 season was a dramatic one for Hamburger SV under manager Frank Pagelsdorf. Despite boasting the Bundesliga’s top scorer, Sergej Barbarez, who netted 22 goals, HSV slipped down the table to finish a disappointing 13th place. Their campaign also ended early in the DFB-Pokal with a second-round exit, while in Europe they reached the Champions League group stage before dropping into the UEFA Cup, where they advanced to the third round.
Hamburg still played a decisive role in the Bundesliga title race on the final day of the season. Facing Bayern Munich, they took the lead in stoppage time, a result which briefly looked to hand the title to Schalke. But a late error by on-loan goalkeeper Mathias Schober gifted Bayern a free kick, converted by Patrik Andersson to secure the draw and Bayern’s 16th league title.
