The 2023 season marked the fourth year of Inter Miami CF’s existence and their 20th season in South Florida’s top-flight soccer. The season was defined by a series of managerial changes, with Phil Neville starting the campaign as head coach but being replaced by Gerardo Martino in July after a difficult start to the season. Interim coach Javier Morales stepped in briefly during the transition. Miami faced struggles throughout the season, including two lengthy losing streaks and a winless run that ultimately led to them finishing second-to-last in the Eastern Conference standings, preventing them from qualifying for the MLS Cup Playoffs.
A highlight of the season was the mid-season arrival of global soccer icon Lionel Messi, joined by former FC Barcelona teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets. These high-profile signings revitalized the team, culminating in a historic Leagues Cup victory—the club’s first-ever trophy—after defeating Nashville SC on penalties in the final. Inter Miami also reached the U.S. Open Cup final for the first time in club history, though they were narrowly defeated 2–1 by Houston Dynamo FC at home.
Despite the late-season success in the Leagues Cup and U.S. Open Cup, Miami’s early-season struggles proved too significant to overcome. Josef Martínez led the team with 12 goals across all competitions, while Leonardo Campana was the team’s top scorer in MLS with nine goals.
