The Italian National Team had a dramatic and unforgettable journey in the 1994 FIFA World Cup, held in the United States. Under the management of Arrigo Sacchi, Italy reached the final, but their campaign ended in heartbreak after losing in a penalty shootout.
Italy’s tournament began shakily in Group E, where they faced Ireland, Norway, and Mexico. They suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat to Ireland in their opening match on June 18, and things got worse when Gianluca Pagliuca, Italy’s goalkeeper, was sent off in their second match against Norway. However, Italy managed a 1-0 victory thanks to a goal from Dino Baggio, keeping their tournament hopes alive. A 1-1 draw with Mexico in their final group match was enough for Italy to scrape through to the knockout stages as one of the best third-placed teams.
In the Round of 16, Italy faced Nigeria on July 5. After going behind to a 1-0 Nigerian lead, Italy seemed on the verge of elimination. But Roberto Baggio rescued them with an 88th-minute equalizer and then scored a penalty in extra time to give Italy a 2-1 victory.
In the quarterfinals, Italy faced Spain on July 9, and once again, it was Roberto Baggio who was the hero. After Dino Baggio had given Italy the lead, Spain equalized, but Baggio scored a brilliant late goal to secure a 2-1 win and a place in the semifinals.
The semifinal against Bulgaria on July 13 saw another masterclass from Baggio, who scored twice in the first half to lead Italy to a 2-1 victory, sending them into the final against Brazil.
The 1994 World Cup final was played on July 17 in the scorching heat of Pasadena, California. The match between Italy and Brazil ended in a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes, and for the first time in World Cup history, the final was decided by a penalty shootout. Italy missed three penalties, including the decisive one from Roberto Baggio, sending Brazil to a 3-2 shootout victory and leaving Italy as runners-up.
