The 1996 UEFA European Championship held in England was a disappointing tournament for the Italian National Team, managed by Arrigo Sacchi. After reaching the final of the 1994 World Cup, hopes were high for a strong performance at Euro 1996. However, Italy’s campaign ended in the group stage, marking a frustrating tournament for the Azzurri.

Italy was placed in Group C, alongside Germany, Czech Republic, and Russia. In their opening match on June 11, 1996, Italy secured a 2-1 victory against Russia, with goals from Pierluigi Casiraghi, giving them a positive start.

However, in their second match against Czech Republic on June 14, Italy suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat. Despite Enrico Chiesa’s goal, Italy’s hopes were dented by poor defending and a lackluster overall performance.

Facing Germany in their final group game on June 19, Italy needed a win to advance. In a tense and tactical battle, Italy drew 0-0 despite a penalty miss by Gianfranco Zola. The draw, combined with the Czech Republic’s victory over Russia, meant that Italy were eliminated on goal difference.

Italy’s early exit was seen as a major disappointment, especially considering the talent within the squad. Sacchi’s tactics came under criticism, and the failure at Euro 1996 marked the end of his time as Italy’s head coach.
