The 2012 UEFA European Championship in Poland and Ukraine was a memorable tournament for the Italian National Team, managed by Cesare Prandelli. Italy entered the competition with a mix of experienced players like Gianluigi Buffon, Andrea Pirlo, and Daniele De Rossi, alongside emerging talents like Mario Balotelli. The team sought to reclaim European glory, having last won the tournament in 1968.

Italy was drawn into Group C alongside Spain, Croatia, and Ireland. In their opening match on June 10, 2012, they faced reigning champions Spain, securing a hard-fought 1-1 draw, with Antonio Di Natale scoring Italy’s goal. They followed that up with another 1-1 draw against Croatia, with Pirlo scoring a stunning free-kick. In their final group game, Italy defeated Ireland 2-0, with goals from Antonio Cassano and Mario Balotelli, ensuring their progression to the quarter-finals.

In the quarter-finals on June 24, Italy faced England. After a tense 0-0 draw through 120 minutes, Italy triumphed 4-2 on penalties, with Buffon saving a crucial penalty. This win set up a semi-final clash with Germany on June 28, where Balotelli stole the show with two goals in a 2-1 victory, sending Italy to the final.

In the final on July 1, 2012, Italy once again faced Spain. However, the match turned out to be a one-sided affair, with Spain defeating Italy 4-0, the heaviest defeat ever in a Euro Final.
