Japan’s 2000 AFC Asian Cup campaign in Lebanon marked a defining moment in the nation’s football history, as they claimed their second continental title. Coached by Frenchman Philippe Troussier, Japan showcased a dynamic and attacking style of play throughout the tournament.
Japan was placed in Group C alongside Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, and Qatar. The group stage was a breeze for the Samurai Blue, as they won all three matches convincingly. This included a stunning 4–1 victory over Saudi Arabia, the defending champions, in which Hiroshi Nanami and Hidetoshi Nakata led the team with standout performances.
In the knockout stages, Japan’s resolve and quality were evident. In the quarter-finals, they defeated Iraq 4–1, with Shoji Jo and Akinori Nishizawa among the scorers. The semi-finals saw them edge past China 3–2 in a thrilling encounter, thanks to a brace from Naohiro Takahara.
The final was against surprise package Saudi Arabia, and Japan triumphed 1–0 in a tightly contested match. The winning goal came from Shigeyoshi Mochizuki, ensuring Japan lifted the trophy for the second time in their history, following their first triumph in 1992.
