Japan’s campaign at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany marked their third consecutive appearance in the tournament, following their first qualification in 1998. Coached by Brazilian legend Zico, Japan was drawn into Group F alongside Brazil, Croatia, and Australia, creating a tough path to the knockout stage.
Japan began their tournament with a 3–1 defeat to Australia, despite leading for much of the match. Shunsuke Nakamura gave Japan the lead in the 26th minute, but a late collapse saw them concede three goals in the final eight minutes, with Tim Cahill scoring twice for Australia. This result severely impacted Japan’s chances of progressing from the group.
In their second match, Japan faced Croatia in a game that ended in a 0–0 draw. Goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi played a crucial role in keeping a clean sheet, including saving a penalty, but Japan struggled to find the net and secure the win they needed.
The final group game was against reigning champions Brazil. Despite a spirited effort and a goal from Keiji Tamada, Japan lost 4–1, with Ronaldo, Adriano, and Juninho scoring for Brazil. Japan finished last in their group with one point, marking a disappointing end to their World Cup campaign.
