The 2004–05 season was Liverpool’s 113th in existence and their 43rd consecutive in England’s top flight. Under new manager Rafael Benítez, who replaced Gérard Houllier, Liverpool finished 5th in the Premier League—one spot lower than the previous season. Domestically, they exited the FA Cup in the third round and were runners-up in the League Cup after a 3–2 loss to Chelsea.

Despite a mixed domestic campaign, the club achieved European glory by winning the UEFA Champions League for the fifth time, famously defeating AC Milan in the final.

The squad saw significant changes, with key signings like Djibril Cissé, Xabi Alonso, and Luis García joining, while Michael Owen and Danny Murphy were among those who departed. A total of 32 players featured in competitive matches, with John Arne Riise making the most appearances (57) and Baroš, Gerrard, and García each finishing as joint top scorers with 13 goals in all competitions.
