The 2007–08 season for Manchester City was transformative under new owner Thaksin Shinawatra and manager Sven-Göran Eriksson. Backed by approximately £30 million in summer signings, the team started the season strongly, spending much of it in the Premier League’s top five. However, a slump in form during the latter part of the season saw City finish ninth. Despite this, City secured UEFA Cup qualification via the Fair Play rankings. Eriksson’s dismissal at the season’s end sparked mixed reactions among fans, and he was replaced by Mark Hughes in June 2008.
