Manchester City entered the 2012–13 season as defending Premier League champions, following a dramatic title win the previous year. However, they finished second in the league, 11 points behind Manchester United. In the FA Cup, City reached the final but suffered a shocking 1–0 defeat to Wigan Athletic, with Ben Watson scoring the late winner. They were also eliminated early from the League Cup, losing in the third round to Aston Villa. In the UEFA Champions League, City struggled in the “group of death,” finishing bottom of their group with three draws and three losses, failing to progress to the knockout stages or the Europa League.
Despite winning the Community Shield at the start of the season, City ended the campaign without additional silverware. On 13 May 2013, two days after the FA Cup final loss, manager Roberto Mancini was sacked due to unmet expectations, including failure to secure a second consecutive league title or major cup victories. His assistant, Brian Kidd, took over as caretaker manager for the remainder of the season. Edin Džeko was the top league scorer with 14 goals, while Sergio Agüero and Carlos Tevez both scored 17 goals across all competitions.
