The 2015–16 season was Manchester City’s 114th year of competitive football and a historic one for the club. Under manager Manuel Pellegrini, City secured the League Cup, defeating Liverpool on penalties in the final at Wembley on 28 February 2016. Despite finishing fourth in the Premier League after a strong start, they ensured qualification for the next Champions League season.
This campaign was City’s most successful in Europe to date. They advanced to the Champions League semi-finals for the first time, beating PSG in the quarter-finals but narrowly losing 0–1 on aggregate to eventual winners Real Madrid. Sergio Agüero shone, finishing as the club’s top scorer with 29 goals across all competitions. The season marked Pellegrini’s farewell, paving the way for Pep Guardiola’s arrival.
