The 1997–98 season saw Manchester City relegated to the third tier for the first time in club history. Frank Clark started the season as manager but was replaced by Joe Royle in February 1998. City’s performance struggled, finishing 22nd in the First Division. Key signings included Lee Bradbury for a record £3 million, while Georgi Kinkladze stayed amid transfer speculation. The club also introduced a new badge and “laser blue” kits. Paul Dickov was the top scorer with 9 goals in all competitions.
