In the 2000–01 season, Manchester United dominated the Premier League, securing their third consecutive title and seventh since 1993. While stellar in the league, their cup campaigns were disappointing, exiting in the FA Cup’s fourth round, the League Cup’s fourth round, and the Champions League quarter-finals. New goalkeeper Fabien Barthez impressed, while veteran Teddy Sheringham excelled with 21 goals, earning the PFA and FWA Player of the Year awards. However, Sheringham and Henning Berg departed by season’s end, with Ruud van Nistelrooy joining as a marquee signing.
The 2001–02 season saw a drop in form, with United finishing third in the league, their lowest Premier League finish at the time. A poor spell in November and December, including six home losses, derailed their title hopes. They reached the Champions League semi-finals but failed to win any silverware for the first time in four years. Ruud van Nistelrooy shone with 36 goals, but defensive struggles after Jaap Stam’s departure to Lazio, and mixed performances from record-signing Juan Sebastián Verón, highlighted the campaign. Veteran players Denis Irwin, Ronny Johnsen, and Dwight Yorke left by season’s end. Sir Alex Ferguson reversed an initial decision to retire, ensuring stability moving forward.
