The 2011–12 season was a dramatic and bittersweet one for Manchester United as they pursued a record 20th Premier League title. After winning the Community Shield with a 3–2 victory over Manchester City, United faced a series of challenges. They were knocked out of the League Cup by Crystal Palace, and their Champions League campaign ended in disappointment with a third-place finish in their group, relegating them to the Europa League.
In the domestic cups, United’s FA Cup run ended in the fourth round with a 2–1 loss to Liverpool, and they were eliminated in the Europa League Round of 16 by Athletic Bilbao. The season’s defining moment came on the final day, when United finished level on points with Manchester City, but City’s superior goal difference, secured by two late goals in their final match, handed them the title. United’s top scorer, Wayne Rooney, netted 27 goals in the league and 34 across all competitions. The season marked the retirements of club legends Gary Neville and Edwin van der Sar, signaling the end of an era.
