United started their Premier League campaign on 20 August 2012, and after narrowly losing out on the title on goal difference the previous year, they dominated the league. The title was clinched on 22 April 2013 with a 3–0 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford, with Van Persie scoring a hat-trick, including a stunning volley that became one of the season’s defining moments. Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement was announced on 8 May 2013, marking the end of an era. Ferguson, the longest-serving manager in English football at the time, had won an unparalleled 38 trophies with United, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest managers in football history. His replacement was David Moyes, who was confirmed as United’s next manager starting the 2013–14 season.
