The 2021–22 season was a difficult and chaotic campaign for Manchester United, marked by managerial changes, underwhelming performances, and disappointment across all competitions. The return of Cristiano Ronaldo, 12 years after his departure, was the season’s standout moment. Despite his individual brilliance, finishing as the club’s top scorer with 24 goals in all competitions, United struggled to achieve consistency or meet expectations.
The managerial turmoil began when Ole Gunnar Solskjær was sacked on 21 November 2021 after a string of poor results. Michael Carrick briefly took over as caretaker manager for three matches, guiding the team to a Champions League victory over Villarreal before handing over the reins. Ralf Rangnick was appointed interim managertasked with stabilizing the team for the remainder of the season.
Domestically, United endured their worst Premier League season in terms of points, finishing with just 58. This placed them sixth in the table, enough to secure UEFA Europa League qualification. Their FA Cup run ended in the fourth round after a penalty shootout loss to Middlesbrough, while they were eliminated in the third round of the EFL Cup by West Ham United.
In the UEFA Champions League, United were knocked out in the Round of 16 by Atletico Madrid.
