The 1998–99 season was Manchester United’s seventh in the FA Premier League and their 24th consecutive season in the top tier of English football. After a trophyless previous campaign, United made history by becoming the first English team to win the Treble, clinching the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League. They lost only five times all season—once in the Charity Shield against Arsenal, in the fifth round of the League Cup to Tottenham Hotspur, and three league matches, including a sole home defeat to Middlesbrough in December 1998. A remarkable 33-match unbeaten streak began on 26 December against Nottingham Forest, whom they later defeated 8–1 away in February, setting their record for the biggest Premier League away win.
The season was marked by dramatic comebacks, particularly in the FA Cup against Liverpool and the Champions League semi-final against Juventus, culminating in a legendary last-minute turnaround in the Champions League final, where injury-time goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær overturned Bayern Munich’s lead.
Key player departures included veterans Gary Pallister and Brian McClair, but their high-profile replacements, Jaap Stam from PSV and Dwight Yorke from Aston Villa, were record signings. Goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel announced his departure after eight years at the club, moving to Sporting CP at the end of the season. Early in the campaign, BSkyB launched a £600 million takeover bid for the club, which was blocked by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission in March 1999.
Manager Alex Ferguson’s achievement in guiding United to the Treble is considered his greatest, earning him a knighthood and the Freedom of the City of Glasgow. David Beckham was named UEFA Club Footballer of the Year for his contributions, and he was a runner-up for both the Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year. United’s Treble triumph has only been matched by one other English club—Manchester City in the 2022–23 season.
