In 2005, following a disappointing start to the season, Graeme Souness was sacked after a string of poor results. His replacement, Glenn Roeder, led the team to an impressive recovery, finishing 7th after starting from 15th. The season was marked by key transfers, including Michael Owen’s £17 million arrival from Real Madrid, but a major injury setback for Owen hindered the team’s progress. Despite a poor FA Cup run, Roeder’s leadership secured a UEFA Intertoto Cup spot, and he was given a two-year contract to continue the rebuilding process.
