The 2003–04 season was challenging for Real Madrid. Despite a strong start and winning the Supercopa de España, the team faltered late in the campaign. They topped La Liga mid-season but suffered eliminations in the Champions League quarter-finals (to Monaco) and Copa del Rey final (against Zaragoza). Madrid’s disastrous finish in the league saw five consecutive losses, dropping them to fourth place, their worst finish until 2013–14. Ronaldo was the season’s top scorer with 31 goals across all competitions.
