The 2003–04 season was a disappointing campaign for Sporting CP, following the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United and Mário Jardel to Bolton Wanderers. Despite an opening-day 2-1 win over Académica Coimbra, secured by Beto’s last-minute goal, inconsistency plagued their Primeira Liga campaign.
Under manager Fernando Santos, Sporting showed promise with an 18-match unbeaten run after a mixed start. However, their form deteriorated late in the season, starting with a heavy 4-0 loss to Rio Ave on 27 March 2004. Although they responded with three consecutive wins, losses to Boavista, União Leiria, and a Lisbon derby defeat to Benfica—decided by Geovanni’s late goal—ended their hopes of Champions League qualification. Sporting ultimately finished third in the league.
Their struggles extended to cup competitions. In the Taça de Portugal, Sporting was eliminated in the fifth round by Vitória Guimarães. In the UEFA Cup, the team suffered a shocking second-round exit, conceding three late goals at home to Gençlerbirliği after a draw in the first leg. Liédson was a rare bright spot, finishing as the club’s top scorer with 15 league goals and 19 in all competitions.
