The 2006–07 season saw Valencia CF make significant changes under coach Quique Sánchez Flores resulting in a major squad overhaul. Key players like Marco Di Vaio, Bernardo Corradi, Pablo Aimar, Rufete, and Mista were sold, while Fábio Aurélio left for Liverpool to reunite with Rafael Benítez. To bolster the squad, Valencia signed Joaquín, Asier del Horno, Fernando Morientes, and Francesco Tavano, while also recalling David Silva and Jaime Gavilán from loan spells and promoting several players from Valencia B.
The team started the season strongly, winning their first three Champions League matches. They were drawn to face Inter Milan in the Round of 16. In La Liga, Valencia began well, with early victories alongside a draw against reigning champions Barcelona, leaving them second in the league as of October. However, injuries to key players caused a slump in November, with six winless matches starting with a loss to Racing Santander.
Valencia finished 4th in La Liga, reached the Champions League quarter-finals, and were eliminated in the Round of 16 of the Copa del Rey. David Villa was the team’s standout performer, scoring 16 league goals and 20 across all competitions.
