The 1998–99 season was a rollercoaster for ACF Fiorentina, as Giovanni Trapattoni’s side enjoyed moments of brilliance but ultimately fell short on multiple fronts. Leading Serie A for much of the season, Fiorentina’s title challenge crumbled in the latter stages as they dropped crucial points while Milan and Lazio surged ahead. In the end, Fiorentina settled for 3rd place, securing qualification for the 1999–2000 UEFA Champions League.
Their European campaign in the UEFA Cup ended controversially in the second round. Despite defeating Swiss side Grasshoppers on the pitch, Fiorentina were disqualified after a handmade bomb was thrown at a linesman, an incident that overshadowed their efforts. The club also reached the Coppa Italia Final but fell to Parma, missing out on a chance for silverware.
Individually, Gabriel Batistuta had a phenomenal season, scoring 21 goals in Serie A and 26 in all competitions, while Rui Costa orchestrated the midfield with creativity and flair. Goalkeeper Francesco Toldo was a standout performer as well, but defensive frailties proved costly, with too many goals conceded throughout the season.
