Bruce Rioch became Arsenal manager on 8 June 1995, after guiding Bolton to Premier League promotion. In his only season, Arsenal improved from 12th to 5th in the league, earning UEFA Cup qualification and finishing with the best defensive record. Rioch signed key players like Dennis Bergkamp and David Platt but clashed with Ian Wright and the board over transfers. Despite progress, disagreements with vice-chairman David Dein led to his dismissal in August 1996, making his 431-day tenure the shortest since William Elcoat’s in 1898–99.
