The 2011–12 season was Athletic Bilbao’s 111th season in existence and their 81st consecutive campaign in La Liga. Under new head coach Marcelo Bielsa, the team showcased an exciting and high-intensity playing style, which brought significant progress in cup competitions despite a mid-table 10th-place finish in La Liga. Bilbao reached the finals of both the UEFA Europa League and the Copa del Rey, though they fell short in both, losing 3–0 to Atlético Madrid in the Europa League final and to Barcelona by the same scoreline in the Copa del Rey. Fernando Llorente was a key player, finishing as the top scorer with 17 league goals and 29 in all competitions.
