The 2005–06 season marked Chelsea’s Centenary year, managed by José Mourinho. They defended their Premier League title, securing it with a 3–0 victory over Manchester United, and also won the Community Shield. Notable signings included Michael Essien and Shaun Wright-Phillips. Despite their domestic success, they were eliminated in the Champions League Round of 16 by Barcelona and reached the FA Cup semi-finals but lost to Liverpool. Chelsea’s record-breaking start to the season included nine consecutive league wins and winning against every Premier League opponent. Frank Lampard was the top scorer with 20 goals.
