The 2002–03 season marked a highly successful yet bittersweet year for Juventus. Under the guidance of manager Marcello Lippi, the club clinched the Serie A title for the second consecutive season, finishing seven points ahead of second-placed Inter Milan and 11 points ahead of A.C. Milan. This continued their domestic dominance, showcasing their strength in Italian football.
In Europe, Juventus had a remarkable run to the UEFA Champions League final, defeating major clubs such as Real Madrid in the knockout stages. They faced Milan in the final, which ended in a 0–0 draw, leading to a penalty shoot-out. Unfortunately for Juventus, they lost 3–2 in the shootout, making it the fourth time under Lippi’s management that the club had reached the final but failed to win it (previous losses were in 1997 and 1998, with a win in 1996).
The season was particularly notable for the performances of Pavel Nedvěd, who had one of the best seasons of his career. Nedvěd, playing in a new trequartista role instead of his usual left midfield position, was awarded the 2003 Ballon d’Or in recognition of his outstanding contributions. However, his absence from the Champions League final, due to a yellow card suspension from the semi-final, was a significant blow to Juventus.
Alessandro Del Piero finished as the club’s top scorer, with 16 goals in Serie A and 23 overall across all competitions. Juventus also triumphed in the Supercoppa Italiana, adding another trophy to their collection, but were knocked out of the Coppa Italia in the quarter-finals.
