The 2023–24 season marked AS Roma’s 97th year in existence and their 72nd consecutive season in Serie A. The club participated in Serie A, the Coppa Italia, and the UEFA Europa League. The season began under José Mourinho, but following a disappointing exit from the Coppa Italia against rivals Lazio and a mid-season slump that left Roma in ninth place in the league, Mourinho was dismissed on 16 January 2024 after two and a half years with the club. He was replaced by former captain Daniele De Rossi, who took over on a contract until the end of the season.
Under De Rossi, Roma showed some signs of recovery, though they remained in 6th place in Serie A. The club made it to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League but was eliminated before reaching the final. In the Coppa Italia, they were eliminated in the quarter-finals. Despite these challenges, the team’s attacking efforts were highlighted by Paulo Dybala and Romelu Lukaku, both of whom scored 13 goals in the league, with Lukaku finishing as the top scorer for all competitions with 21 goals.
The season also saw changes off the pitch, with general manager Tiago Pinto departing by mutual consent in February 2024. However, owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin expressed their intention to retain De Rossi as manager “for the foreseeable future” after his appointment. At home games, Roma drew an average attendance of 62,924 fans, showing the continued support of their loyal fanbase.
