The 2013–14 season marked a turbulent chapter for Manchester United as David Moyes succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson, who retired after 27 years in charge. Moyes began with a promising Community Shield victory but struggled to maintain consistency, resulting in United’s worst league performance since the late 1980s.
United finished seventh in the Premier League, missing European qualification for the first time since 1990. They exited the FA Cup in the third round and were knocked out of the League Cup semi-finals on penalties by Sunderland. In the Champions League, they reached the quarter-finals but were eliminated 4–2 on aggregate by Bayern Munich.
Moyes was sacked in April 2014, with Ryan Giggs stepping in as interim manager for the final four games. Giggs retired as a player at season’s end, concluding a legendary 25-year career. On May 19, 2014, Louis van Gaal was announced as the new manager, tasked with rebuilding the club.
