In the 2008–09 season, Real Madrid finished 2nd in La Liga under head coach Bernd Schuster, who was replaced by Juande Ramos in December. They won the Supercopa de España but were eliminated in the Round of 16 in both the Champions League and Copa del Rey. Gonzalo Higuaín was the team’s top scorer with 22 league goals and overall.
