The 1997–98 season saw Bayern Munich finish as runners-up in the Bundesliga, just behind newly promoted 1. FC Kaiserslautern. Despite the disappointment in the league, Bayern found domestic success under manager Giovanni Trapattoni, claiming their first DFB-Pokal title since 1986 by defeating MSV Duisburg 2–1 in the final at Olympiastadion Berlin. They also secured the DFB-Ligapokal trophy earlier in the season.
In Europe, Bayern reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals but were eliminated by Borussia Dortmund after extra time, with Dortmund being the defending champions. Carsten Jancker emerged as Bayern’s top scorer, netting 13 goals in the Bundesliga and 23 across all competitions.
