In the 1996–97 season, Borussia Dortmund failed to secure a third consecutive Bundesliga title, finishing third in the league, eight points behind champions Bayern Munich. The domestic campaign also saw disappointment in the DFB-Pokal, where Dortmund exited in the first round.
However, the season is remembered as the most successful in the club’s history due to their remarkable UEFA Champions League triumph. Under manager Ottmar Hitzfeld, Dortmund captured their first-ever Champions League title, defeating Juventus 3–1 in the final at Munich’s Olympiastadion. Juventus, boasting stars like Zinedine Zidane, Didier Deschamps, and Christian Vieri, were outclassed by Dortmund in a historic performance.
Dortmund also claimed the DFB-Supercup earlier in the season, adding another piece of silverware to their collection. Stéphane Chapuisat led the team in scoring with 13 goals in the Bundesliga and 16 across all competitions.
