The 2012–13 season marked Chelsea’s 99th competitive season and included highs and lows. After starting under Roberto Di Matteo, who was sacked in November, Rafael Benítez took over as interim manager. Chelsea won the UEFA Europa League, their first title in the competition, by defeating Benfica in the final. They finished third in the Premier League, reached the semi-finals of both the FA Cup and League Cup, and were runners-up in the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. Frank Lampard and Fernando Torres led in scoring.
