Manchester City’s 2002–03 season marked their return to the Premier League under Kevin Keegan, following a record-breaking promotion campaign. Keegan invested heavily in the squad, signing Nicolas Anelka for a club-record £13m, Sylvain Distin for £5m, and Peter Schmeichel on a free transfer. Additional signings included Marc-Vivien Foé (on loan) and Robbie Fowler. City achieved a 9th-place finish in the Premier League and celebrated a landmark victory over Manchester United, winning their first derby in 13 years.
This was also the final season at Maine Road, culminating in Marc-Vivien Foé scoring the stadium’s last goal. Off the field, tensions arose as chairman David Bernstein resigned over a dispute involving Keegan’s managerial autonomy. John Wardle took over as chairman, stabilizing the club. The campaign laid the groundwork for City’s future in their new home, the City of Manchester Stadium, starting the next season.
