The 2008–09 season was a remarkable campaign for Manchester United, marking their 17th season in the Premier League and 34th consecutive year in the top flight of English football. The club secured a third consecutive Premier League title, equaling Liverpool’s historic record of 18 league championships. United’s domestic dominance was complemented by a deep run in Europe, though they fell short in the Champions League final, losing 2–0 to an exceptional Barcelona side.
The season began with success in the Community Shield, as United defeated Portsmouth on penalties following a goalless draw. However, the UEFA Super Cup eluded them after a 2–1 defeat to Zenit Saint Petersburg. Redemption came in December, when United won the FIFA Club World Cup, beating Ecuadorian side LDU Quito 1–0 in the final, making them the first English team to lift the trophy. Their triumph was further bolstered on 1 March 2009, when they claimed the League Cup by defeating Tottenham Hotspur on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes.
The crowning achievement came on 16 May 2009, when a 0–0 draw with Arsenal at Old Trafford clinched the Premier League title. This made United the first team in English football history to achieve three consecutive league championships twice, having previously done so between 1999 and 2001.
The season also marked the end of an era, as Cristiano Ronaldo, a pivotal figure in United’s success, played his final matches before joining Real Madrid in June 2009 for a then-record transfer fee. This campaign cemented Ronaldo’s legacy at the club, concluding his first spell as a Red Devil on a high note before his eventual return over a decade later.
