Following a heartbreaking runner-up finish the previous year, Newcastle United entered the 1996/97 season with high hopes and the record signing of Alan Shearer from Blackburn Rovers. Despite a strong start and a memorable 5–0 victory over Manchester United, inconsistency struck, leading to the resignation of Kevin Keegan in January 1997. Kenny Dalglish took over and guided the team to a late surge, finishing second in the Premier League once again and securing Champions League qualification.
Cup runs were less successful, with exits in the fourth round of both the FA Cup and League Cup, and a quarter-final defeat to AS Monaco in the UEFA Cup. Shearer was the standout performer, finishing as top scorer with 28 goals in all competitions.
