The 1998–1999 season was a strong campaign for Olympique de Marseille, marking their best performance since the 1993 bribery affair. Managed by Rolland Courbis, the team finished 2nd in Division 1, just behind Bordeaux, and reached the UEFA Cup final, though they were narrowly defeated. Key players like Laurent Blanc, Christophe Dugarry, and Fabrizio Ravanelli were integral to Marseille’s resurgence. However, once these players departed, the club struggled. Marseille were eliminated in the Round of 32 in both the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue. Florian Maurice was the team’s top scorer, netting 14 goals in the league.
