During the 1996–97 season, Valencia CF made several high-profile signings, including World Cup winner Romário (on loan from Barcelona), Claudio López, Fernando Cáceres, Leandro Machado, and Goran Vlaović, aiming to replace star forward Predrag Mijatović, who had been sold to Real Madrid. However, Romário’s time at the club was short-lived and controversial, ending in October after disputes with head coach Luis Aragonés, who resigned in November following poor results and tensions with the club president.
Valencia’s season fell short of expectations. They finished 10th in La Liga, missing out on European qualification. In the Copa del Rey, they were knocked out in the Round of 16 by second-division side UD Las Palmas, and their UEFA Cup run ended in the quarter-finals with a 1–3 loss to Schalke 04. Leandro and Goran Vlaović were the team’s top league scorers in an overall disappointing campaign.
