The 1999–2000 season was pivotal for Valencia CF, as they emerged as a European powerhouse under new manager Héctor Cúper, who replaced Claudio Ranieri amidst speculation about Ranieri’s move to Atlético Madrid. Cúper’s appointment marked a focus on defensive solidity while maintaining attacking flair. The team’s performances in La Liga secured a 3rd-place finish, ensuring qualification for the following season’s UEFA Champions League.

Valencia’s Champions League run was historic, with standout performances from key players like playmaker Gaizka Mendieta, who scored 13 league goals and 19 across all competitions and was named the best midfielder in the Champions League. The team eliminated strong opponents, including Lazio in the quarter-finals and Barcelona progressing in the semi-finals. However, in the final against Real Madrid, Valencia suffered a crushing 3–0 defeat in the first-ever all-Spanish Champions League final at Stade de France.

Despite their European success, the club exited the Copa del Rey early, in the Round of 32. Notable squad members included Santiago Cañizares, Gerard, Javier Farinós, and Claudio López, the latter sold to Lazio at the end of the season. Gerard also departed, joining Barcelona for £15 million after the campaign concluded.
